Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Avery
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is one that should ring true to many of your viewers. I followed the typical trajectory for American success which included college, graduate school and a career for over 27 years. Along the line, I found and lost love, and helped to create a wonderful family complete with three wonderful children. While all of this kept me fulfilled, I always had a voice in the corner of my mind pushing me towards a life that also included service and improving the overall quality of life for myself and those around me. I found the scratch to this itch by becoming involved in the local neighborhood association. From member, to committee leader, to vice president, to president, to community president, I have seen how to affect change at all levels. This also opened doors for me in advocating for my true passion public art. By taking advantage of every opportunity that comes my way, I have been able to have a very satisfying existence and hope to continue to expand as long as I am around on this great rock.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Getting to where I am now hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like your readers all know, life alone will provide twists and turns that will always keep you guessing. The thing to remember is when things start to look bleak, it is not the universe against you. It’s just your turn. The key is learning from every situation to make sure that you are stronger and wiser coming out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Cottage Noir is a lifestyle concept which focuses on the intersection between fashion, food, drink and design. Basically, I curate and create products and services for each pillar. For example, the drink pillar of the concept creates custom cocktails and mocktails for your occasion and is lovingly referred to as Jason Juice. I also have joined forces with a local development company to reimagine old homes into new modern spaces. The project is called RJ Properties by Cottage Noir. The entire concept stands out because there is always something that is unexpected in every product. Whether it be a rosemary spiced simple syrup in the Jason juice or exotic live edge mani wood countertops in a kitchen, we push everyday life to make it a little more elevated.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Birmingham is a fascinating and wonderful city. I just celebrated my 31st year of living here. I am originally from Philadelphia, PA, but was raised in St. Petersburg, FL. I love that fact that Birmingham is a progressive gem that many would not expect. There is always room and openness to innovation here and it shines in our art, food and burgeoning tech scene. My one real dislike is our relatively short and not so snowy winters. I would like a little longer break from the hat.
