Rising Stars: Meet Miranda Goodman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Goodman

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I went to Cosmetology School at Paul Mitchell in Huntsville, Alabama and started working at 19. My mom told me to watch what you buy your children when they are young because that’s what they will be. I loved my hairstylist set as a child and all things hair. My mom taught me to braid on a “my little pony.” In high school I found myself interested in different paths and questioning if I could make a difference. I wanted to do something special, helpful to others, and that I loved. I truly asked myself if I could make a difference with this career path. The answer is yes! Forming relationships, being a confidant, boosting someone’s confidence, and being supportive of my clients is so special to me. I love being creative with cuts, color, and formal styling. It’s like a puzzle to me and I love thinking about where the next piece should go.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve started over quite a few times. My first job was in Madison and I loved it there but I wanted to be in my hometown so decided to work in Athens. My husband was military so after we got married we moved to Colorado. I actually went back to Cosmetology school for my Instructor’s license thinking this might be a good route for me for once we moved. They weren’t hiring in Colorado when we moved. I love being in the salon so i went searching for a good fit for me. I found one that I was happy at for our time there. I had built a pretty good clientele before we moved. Moving somewhere new where nobody knows you, nobody knows your work, and having to start from scratch is very challenging. I had to find new ways to promote myself. Any Cosmetologist starting over and just starting out knows that feeling. I ended up with a good clientele while in Colorado, which I’m so thankful for, but it for sure was a slow start. I definitely had to put in some hard work. We moved back to Alabama, which is home for us, and I started over again. I am currently at Lemon Salon in Athens, super happy in my career, and have the best clients a girl could ask for.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In salon I love doing it all. Coloring, foil work, women’s cuts, men’s cuts, kids cuts, brow waxes, etc. But, I also do bridal hair. Weddings have gotten busier for me the last couple of years. It’s an honor to be chosen for such a special day. I work closely with makeup artist, Olivia Sparks. You can book us as a team for your wedding day through her website or message me individually. I love serving the Huntsville area and surrounding community. I feel like bridal hair is where I am most creative. I like hearing all the things that person loves and putting it all together in a style while using creativity and my own personal style.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Something that’s always important for someone that is self employed is to be prepared for those financial situations. When we are out of work, we make no money. Same goes for sickness, maternity leave, etc.
