Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Reno.
Hi Jimmy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started singing at four years old and picked up the trombone at eleven. Growing up, I fell in love with everything from soul, jazz, and pop to country and gospel, and those influences still shape my music today.
Over the years, I’ve been blessed to perform in churches, bands, and on stages across the country, including spending more than a decade as the lead vocalist for the nationally touring country gospel group Mark209. Along the way, I also worked in law enforcement, an experience that taught me discipline, perseverance, and a deeper appreciation for people and their stories.
Today, I’m focused on creating music that blends soul, country, jazz, and faith into a sound that’s uniquely my own. Through my labels, Slide City Records and Kingdom Outlaw Records, I’m releasing original music that reflects my life, my faith, and my love for timeless melodies. My goal has always been simple: create music that connects with people, encourages them, and leaves them a little better than before they pressed play.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many artists, I’ve faced my share of setbacks, disappointments, and seasons where I questioned whether I should keep going. I’ve also dealt with significant health challenges, including chronic back issues that have required multiple surgeries and changed the way I perform and work.
On the personal side, I’ve experienced heartbreak, loss, and difficult life circumstances that tested my faith and resilience. Financially, independent artists wear a lot of hats, so building a career without the backing of a major label has meant learning everything from production and marketing to distribution on my own.
Looking back, though, every challenge has shaped who I am as both a person and a songwriter. Those experiences have given me stories to tell and a deeper appreciation for God’s faithfulness. I believe the difficult seasons have made the music more authentic, and if my songs can encourage someone who’s walking through their own struggles, then those hardships weren’t wasted.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and trombonist with a passion for creating music that connects with people on a deeper level. My work spans soul, jazz, country, gospel, and inspirational music, and I’ve never felt confined to one genre. Instead, I try to bring together the best elements of each to create something fresh while still honoring timeless songwriting and musicianship.
One of the things I’m best known for is combining expressive lead trombone with strong vocal melodies and rich arrangements. Whether it’s a soulful love song, a country ballad, a jazz instrumental, or a worship anthem, my goal is always the same—to tell a meaningful story and create music that people will remember long after it’s over.
I’m especially proud of building an independent career on my own terms. From writing and producing my music to releasing it through my own record labels, I’ve learned every aspect of the creative process. I’m also proud of my years as the lead vocalist for the nationally touring country gospel group Mark209, which gave me the opportunity to perform across the country and grow as both an artist and a person.
What sets me apart is my willingness to blend genres without losing authenticity. I believe great music is timeless, and I strive to create songs that combine sophisticated musicianship with melodies that are accessible, memorable, and emotionally honest. Whether someone discovers me through a soulful ballad, a jazz instrumental, or a song about faith, I want them to come away feeling encouraged, inspired, and connected.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The music industry is changing faster than ever, and I think the next five to ten years will continue to be shaped by technology, especially AI. Artists will have more tools than ever to write, record, produce, and promote their music independently. While AI will make creating music more accessible, I believe it will also increase the value of authenticity. Listeners still want to connect with real stories, real emotions, and artists who have something genuine to say.
Streaming will remain important, but I think artists will rely less on major labels and more on building direct relationships with their fans through social media, live performances, and exclusive content. Independent artists have more opportunities today than at any other time in history, but they also have to wear many hats as musicians, marketers, and entrepreneurs.
Musically, I believe we’re already seeing a return to strong melodies, live instruments, and timeless songwriting. Audiences are looking for music with heart rather than just the latest trend. That’s encouraging because I’ve always believed that great songs never go out of style.
For me, the future isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about embracing new technology while staying committed to creating music that’s honest, memorable, and built to last.
