Life & Work with Erica Wright of Alabama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Wright.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Author Erica Denise. I’ve been writing all of my life; writing and reading has always been an escape for me and creating stories allowed me a place to thrive and for my creativity to grow. I hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Alabama and prior to becoming a published author, I was a journalist for several years for the Birmingham Times Newspaper. It was not until 2024 that I finally decided to publish some of my fictional writing. In July 2024, my father passed away; August 2024, my father’s mother-my grandmother-passed away; and in September 2024, my aunt passed away. Experiencing so much death and grief in a short amount of time really affected me mentally and one of the ways I coped was by returning to writing. When I started writing my first book, The Remedy that October, it was an outlet for my grief but deciding to publish it really gave me purpose and on my 29th birthday, December 6, 2024, I released it! Now, I have four published works and am working on my fifth, slated to release this fall and the rest is history!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest thing has been doing this after my dad and aunt passed. While drowning in grief from their deaths gave me the fuel I needed, it’s hard accomplishing so much without them here. Aside from that, the biggest struggle is figuring out the indie publishing space. I’m not only the author, but the marketing specialist, the graphic designer, the editor, proofreader, etc. I don’t have a team of people helping me push my books, it’s just me so that has been really hard. A lot of information about the space, I learn as I go and since I’m coming up on two years as a published author, I’m still learning and growing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the author of four published books: The Remedy, To China with Love, Love Back in Sessions and an exclusive book I published for an event entitled Tropical Temptations: Nasir and Athena. I am currently working on my fifth book, Love You Better, which will be my first full length novel as all of my other books are novellas. My fifth book is slated to release this fall.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Telling stories that not only entertain people but that also resonate with them on a deeper, more personal level. As an avid reader, words really do have the power to change you, to make you grow or even heal and if I can help someone in their healing or growth journey as a writer and not just merely entertain them, then that touches me and drives me to keep going and keep telling stories centered on Black love.
