Today we’d like to introduce you to Jermaine Johnson.
Hi Jermaine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
ZipTrip started from seeing a gap in the Birmingham market for fun that I saw in other cities, unique luxury experiences without having to leave the city. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset and wanted to build something that combined lifestyle, convenience, and entertainment. The idea was simple: create an experience where people could enjoy something different, whether for a date, celebration, weekend outing, or just to ride around the city in style. Thats why our slogan is “EXPERIENCE BIRMINGHAM”
What helped us make it this long was focusing on customer experience. We wanted ZipTrip to be more than just a rental company. We wanted it to feel like an experience people talked about, posted about, and came back for. Over time, we built brand recognition and earned trust in the community.
Today, ZipTrip represents resilience, adaptability, and growth. The journey hasn’t been perfect, but every obstacle has helped shape the business into what it is now. More than anything, it’s proof that with vision, consistency, and the willingness to adjust, you can build something meaningful from the ground up.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road at all. What started out as a craze because it was something new eventually slowed down and became more of a luxury purchase for people.
When we first started, what we were doing was still very new to the streets. People hadn’t really seen anything like it, so the demand was crazy. On top of that, the year we started was the first year they made automatic Slingshots, which opened the market up to a lot more people who couldn’t drive manual.
It was also during the tail end of COVID, so ZipTrip became an alternative way for people to get out, have fun, and do something different when a lot of normal entertainment options were limited.
As time went on, things changed. It became easier for people to buy their own Slingshots, competition increased, and the novelty naturally wore off some. We’ve had to adapt, pivot, and figure out ways to stay relevant.
We’ve made it, and I’m proud of that, but it definitely hasn’t been easy. Like any business, it’s taken resilience, patience, and a willingness to keep evolving.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
One of my business partners and I are local firefighters. The job brought us together, and over time we built a real brotherhood. My other partner and I are former college teammates. We played football together at Alcorn State University, and that bond was built through a different kind of grind. Both of those relationships, built through trust, discipline, and shared experiences, ultimately gave us the foundation to create together on another level.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to bring people together and get them to work toward a common goal. In different spaces, people trust me enough to see value in who I am, and I don’t take that lightly.
I think that’s what sets me apart from a lot of people. In a social media world where so many people can create a version of themselves that isn’t real, I believe my authenticity is my superpower. What you see is what you get, and I think people respect that.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that just because something sounds like a great idea doesn’t automatically mean it’ll become a great or profitable business.
At the same time, I still believe you should do it anyway, because you’ll never know if you don’t try. Every win and every loss teaches you something. Whatever happens in business, good or bad, you have to be willing to pivot and use it as a learning lesson for the next move.
One thing my business partner and I always say is: we already know what doing nothing gets you… NOTHING. That mindset has carried us through a lot. Sometimes the biggest risk is not taking one at all.
