Rising Stars: Meet Se’maj Hurst of Alabama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Se’maj Hurst.

Hi Se’maj, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I discovered my love for music when I was six years old. I come from a musically inclined family on my dad’s side, and one of my earliest memories is with my older cousin, who was nineteen at the time and a singer herself. She would sing a note and tell me, “Se’maj, copy off of me.” I’d repeat it back, and she was amazed at how accurately I could hear and mimic every note. Looking back, that was the moment I discovered my first love.

As I got older, though, that love became something I kept to myself. I became incredibly shy—not the kind of shy where you’re just quiet, but the kind where standing in front of people feels like putting your entire life on display to be judged. I sang only behind the closed door of my bedroom. Whenever people asked what I loved to do, I would avoid telling the truth. I convinced myself I wasn’t good enough before anyone else had the chance to. I spent years judging my own talent instead of giving it room to grow.

Everything began to change during my teenage years. My family moved about thirty minutes outside of Montgomery, Alabama, and I started over at a new high school. After my junior year, I left school because of a zoning issue and earned my GED instead. What initially felt like an unexpected detour became one of the most important seasons of my life. It forced me to become disciplined, independent, and more in touch with my creativity.

Around that same time, I began creating content on TikTok. What started as recording trending videos eventually grew into a community of more than 160,000 followers across my platforms. Ironically, while thousands of people knew my face, almost no one knew I could sing. Fear still had a hold on me.

That changed just over a year ago.

After meeting my stepbrother, who is a music producer, we spent hours talking one Christmas evening about music, creativity, and our dreams. A month later, I stepped into the studio and recorded my first song. Looking back, it became the push I didn’t know I needed. I finally stepped out of my shell, sang in public for the first time, and released my first two songs.

My journey hasn’t been about discovering whether I could sing—I always could. It’s been about discovering the confidence to let the world hear me. Every song I release is another step away from fear and another step toward becoming the artist I was always meant to be.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any dream worth pursuing, my journey has come with both victories and challenges. The victories have been incredibly rewarding. Choosing to fully embrace my gift introduced me to a community of creatives who understand my passion and continuously inspire me. It also opened doors to opportunities I never imagined. I’ve learned that when you operate in your purpose, the right people and experiences naturally begin to align with you.

The challenges have been just as valuable. One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn is that not everyone will see your vision the way you do— I took an unconventional path and accepted the uncertainty that came with betting on myself. We’re often taught to follow a traditional path, but I realized early on that my journey would look different. Earning my GED, navigating seasons without a stable job, and taking risks to invest in my artistry all required me to trust myself even when the outcome wasn’t guaranteed.

There were moments when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions, but those moments taught me resilience, discipline, and faith in my own voice. I had to stop measuring my life against everyone else’s expectations and start building a life that reflected my purpose. In many ways, I’m not just chasing a music career—I’m breaking generational patterns and showing myself that it’s possible to create a life on my own terms.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an independent R&B artist, songwriter, and online creator. I create music that invites people to feel. My artistry is rooted in vulnerability, storytelling, and emotion; Whether it’s about love, healing, self-discovery, or the experiences that cultivate us. My goal wasn’t just make songs people could hear, but to create music they can truly resonate with.

Outside of music, I’ve built a strong presence as a content creator, growing a community of more than 160,000 followers across TikTok & Instagram. I aim to turn creativity into meaningful connection through lifestyle, beauty, comedy, and relatable content. Rather than simply creating content to go viral, I focus on making people laugh, feel inspired, and see pieces of themselves in the stories I share.

While music may be my first love, beauty was the first creative business I built. Becoming a makeup artist at 16 taught me branding before I even knew what branding was. It taught me color, confidence, presentation, and how to make people feel something through visuals. Now, as an artist, I direct my own image—from my glam and hairstyles to my wardrobe. Today, every look you see, from my makeup and hair to my outfits—is an extension of my artistry.

I believe what sets me apart is my willingness to be creative and intentional. I’m not interested in being an “IG Baddie”—I want to build something meaningful, and If my story gives someone else permission to bet on themselves, then I’m doing exactly what I was created to do.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when my mom & dad gifted me an mp3 player when I was 6 or 7. It had all my favorite songs including my dad’s songs. My dad was a rapper, and he remixed “Song Cry” by Jay Z. I remember crying myself to sleep one night listening to that remix. I felt so happy & connected to his music at such a young age.
