Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Bomani.
Hi Ebony, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by hair—the textures, colors and the different things it could do. When I was about five, my mom noticed my attraction to hair and bought me a doll so I could experiment on her. Unfortunately, I was afraid of the doll, so I decided to practice on my own hair. Ended up cutting off one of my own plaits. HA! As I got older, I became a “kitchen beautician” for several of my friends and family. I noticed how having beautiful, healthy hair positively impacted women’s self-esteem and it eventually led me to sharing that passion with an ever-growing audience on social media, and then to cosmetology school.
Now, I’m a licensed cosmetologist and certified trichologist who’s driven to inspire, enlighten and encourage women by sharing my knowledge of healthy hair care practices, clean(er) beauty, and wellness across my social media platforms. As an independent hairstylist and beauty brand educator/consultant, some of my artistry has been featured in commercials, campaigns, on billboards, and in magazines.
Attending the Aveda Institute, where I earned my cosmetology license, sparked a greater passion for, not just hair care and styling, but also environmental responsibility–surprisingly greater than what it was! From the hair and beauty products that I use and the (mostly) plant-based meals I prepare, to the clean + green household items that sustain my family, I share a diverse body of beauty, wellness, and lifestyle content with my audience. My hope is that they’re encouraged to embrace an ethical lifestyle as much as possible and be their highest and best selves.
My life’s work and journey are ever evolving, and I am open for whatever God has for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Figuring out my “why” was the smoothest part. My greatest challenges were finding my voice when I felt invisible and finding out where I belonged on this road and I quickly realized that I had to carve out my own lane. Then, I decided that I wouldn’t abort mission if I ever felt uninspired, unwelcome, overlooked, stretched or uncomfortable. That was the biggest struggle, at first.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Digital Marketer/Content Creator, turned Licensed Cosmetologist & Trichologist. Although, I practice behind the chair for select clientele from time to time, my main focus is behind the brand. I am a freelance hair stylist and brand educator for a few of your favorite brands. PATTERN, being one of them. What I’m most known for depends on when I came onto your timeline. Most probably know me as a natural hair blogger, with the big hair, from around 2010. Some may know me from when I worked at The Mane Choice and others, PATTERN. I think one thing that sets me apart is that I became a licensed, credible source in the hair care space. Most people that share hair care information on the internet are usually just sharing their own personal experience or routines.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always been fairly quiet around large groups but more engaged around people I knew and liked. Never been sensitive about things that concerned me, but extremely empathetic. You could talk about me all day and it wouldn’t affect me, but I felt deeply for other people and animals.
We moved around a lot, so I enjoyed alone time as a child. It was just easier not to get attached when I didn’t know if/when we’d be moving again—-unless I really liked you. As a creative, my interests were mostly right-brained—-drawing, painting, sewing, knitting, braiding, basket weaving, and creative writing. My left-brained interests were reading, board games and puzzles.
