Conversations with Kenekia Simpkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenekia Simpkins.

Hi Kenekia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Kenekia’s love for music started very early in her life. By the time she was able to walk she knew that dancing would be second nature to her as well as her love for song. As a teenager she would enter herself into the local talent shows in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Kenekia later found herself performing regularly at local nightclub expressing herself either by song or dance. In high school though a very quiet student everyone knew about her dancing abilities. Kenekia found that her peers and teachers would call upon her with the task of being on the dance team and choreographing most of the routines for Senior Class Day. However, her undying passion for music did not stop. A student at Alabama State University, she managed yet more shows around the campus of ASU. Kenekia has performed at ASU Homecoming event with then college classmate Suan aka “Delishious” of MTV’s Flava of Love. In 2004-2005 she worked for Clear Channel radio station(Power 93.3) a syndicated morning show with Doug Banks. With her tenacious drive she managed to work as an intern at a radio station while simultaneously teaching dance classes at Saba International Dance School. While at Power 93.3 due to her accessibility to many celebrities, Kenekia started to pursue another one of her longtime passions to write her own demo hip-hop magazine called Epok. She has interviewed and met Lil Scrappy, Keisha Cole Cee-Lo, Pastor Troy, Crime Mobb, Rasheeda, Master P, Marques Houston, Gucci Man are just a few. Not satisfied with the slow pace of the South, Kenakia realized that major auditions is what she needed to move to the next level of her career. In 2006 she auditioned for American Idol three times. First in Memphis, Tennessee, Chicago, North Carolina, and Birmingham, Al. Not even dismayed by her three attempts, Kenakia followed up the next year with more auditions. In 2007, Kenekia auditioned for Beyonce’s World Wide Tour in Atlanta, Ga, and Bellarie, Texas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With the music industry changing in early 2008 from artist development and major record label signings to now massive streaming services and DYI Artist brandment so did Kenekia approch to the músic industry. In 2021, Kenekia created her own entertainment brand called MAGIC. Under the umbrella of MAGIC, Kenekia created her own independent record label MAGIC RECORDS, MAGIC TV for film/TV productions, and MAGIC BOXING PROMOTIONS for all things sports entertainment. Signing herself to MAGIC RECORDS as the First Lady, and her Brother Mac Teezy, Kenekia has managed and signed former Jamaican Artist, Indekxx, Big Rocky, R/B Singer Anterrion(Sauce T) Atlanta Rapper Dexter Verse and Mac Teezy. After losing most of her artists due to the struggles of everyday life of being a starving artist, MAGIC RECORDS lack of finances and over inflated artists egos. Kenekia had to learn through trail and error, how to manage artists on a small budget and more cost efficiently. Between 2021-2025, MAGIC RECORDS has seen more growth and success with only two artist Luhtree and Jansportjayy. MAGIC RECORDS biggest accomplishment to date was the NEXT TO RISE TOUR of 2025. With her new artists, Kenekia and MAGIC RECORDS is on the rise to bring back feel good music and timeless music. Their motto is simple. We create MAGIC.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Ownership and being my own Boss has always been a mission of mines. Im originally from Birmingham Alabama. I moved to Atlanta Georgia in 2015 to pursue my dreams as an Entrepreneur. I have my own LLC subleasing Airbnbs and my car detailing business called Sexy Bubbles LLC. I started my businesses in April of 2018. I have over thirty loyal clients cars I service. My customers are loyal but I need a black van to become more mobile to service my clients. I ride the bus and travel with all my supplies to service different businesses inside small plaza in the metro Atlanta area. A black van would really help me to become more mobile to service my clients. Being a young black female Entrepreneur can be very costly. I have managed to build the trust of thirty clients with no car.
