Kaiesha D., we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved writing, technology, and community service. While they may seem like completely different worlds, they have all shaped who I am today.
Professionally, I built a successful career in technology. With over 15 years of experience, I worked my way from an intern to a technical leadership role, acquired several software testing certifications, earned my MBA in Information Technology Management, and developed a reputation for solving complex problems and helping organizations improve quality processes. From the outside, it looked like I had accomplished everything I had set out to do.
But internally, something was missing.
Writing had always been my refuge. Since I was a teenager, I’ve written poetry as a way to process my life’s experiences and emotions. Over the years, I became a published author, but I still viewed writing as something separate from my “full-time” career.
Everything changed after experiencing burnout during the pandemic. That season forced me to slow down, reflect, and ask myself what kind of impact I truly wanted to make.
Through counseling, prayer, and a lot of self-reflection, I realized that my greatest fulfillment wasn’t simply achieving professional success—it was helping other people discover the confidence to tell their own stories.
Years later, that realization motivated me to build The Fordward Approach, a coaching and speaking company dedicated to helping purpose-driven individuals transform their lived experiences into professionally published nonfiction books. I’ve discovered that so many people have incredible stories, wisdom, and lessons to share, but fear, self-doubt, perfectionism, or simply not knowing where to begin keeps them silent. My work is helping them move from “I’ve always wanted to write a book” to becoming confident, published authors whose stories create impact, healing, and legacy.
At the same time, my passion for serving others goes beyond my business. I co-founded The Empowerment Approach, a nonprofit organization aimed at empowering youth through history and education, mentorship, creative arts, and leadership development. Whether I’m coaching aspiring authors or mentoring young people, my mission remains the same: to help people recognize the value of their voice and believe that their story matters.
Today, I wear several hats—author, poet, inspirational speaker, entrepreneur, software quality professional, nonprofit leader, and book writing coach. While those roles may seem diverse, they’re all connected by one purpose: helping people move forward with confidence, own their truth, and leave a legacy that inspires others.
If there’s one lesson my journey has taught me, it’s that success isn’t about choosing between your passions. Sometimes your greatest purpose is found at the intersection of everything you’ve experienced. For me, that’s storytelling, leadership, technology, and service coming together to create a life and business that feel deeply meaningful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Like many entrepreneurs, my journey has been filled with moments of uncertainty, setbacks, and growth. While people often see the published books, speaking engagements, awards, and milestones, they don’t always see the efforts behind them.
One of my biggest challenges has been balancing entrepreneurship while maintaining a full-time corporate career. Building a business isn’t something that happens overnight. There have been countless late nights, weekends, and vacations dedicated to writing, coaching, strategic planning, speaking, traveling, networking, and continuous learning. It has required discipline, sacrifice, and a willingness to keep showing up even when progress felt slower than I hoped.
Another significant turning point came during the pandemic when I experienced burnout. For years, I had focused on achieving professionally, but I realized there was a lack of fulfillment. That season forced me to pause and redefine what success truly meant. Through counseling, reflection, and faith, I learned that success isn’t just about climbing the corporate ladder—it’s about values, working with purpose, and prioritizing self-care along the way.
Entrepreneurship has also stretched me in unexpected ways. Having expertise in writing, coaching, or technology doesn’t automatically prepare you to become a marketer, salesperson, financial planner, content creator, and business strategist all at once. I’ve had to invest in mentors, continue learning, and become comfortable with being a novice in areas outside my expertise.
One of the most meaningful lessons has been understanding that transformation takes time. Whether I’m writing a book, mentoring an adult client or young student, building my business, or leading a nonprofit organization, lasting impact is built one intentional step at a time. I celebrate progress instead of chasing perfection and have learned to trust that consistency often accomplishes what quick success cannot.
Looking back, I wouldn’t remove the challenges because they’ve shaped the woman, leader, and coach I am today. They gave me the empathy to support others who are navigating their own next chapter and the confidence to remind them that their story—including the difficult parts—is often what makes their impact so powerful. Like I consistently say: the power of your three P’s—Your Potential, Your Power. Your Peace.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Fordward Approach was born from a simple but powerful belief: everyone has a story worth telling, but not everyone has the clarity, confidence, or support to tell it well.
We help purpose-driven professionals transform their lived experiences into professionally published nonfiction books that create impact, open doors of opportunity, and leave a lasting legacy. While many people dream of writing a book, they often become overwhelmed by self-doubt, perfectionism, or simply not knowing where to begin. That’s where we come in.
Through coaching, strategy, accountability, and publishing guidance, we walk our clients through the entire journey—from uncovering the heart of their story to holding a finished book in their hands. Our signature coaching program, The Published Voice, is designed to help aspiring authors move beyond the idea stage and confidently become published authors without navigating the process alone.
What sets us apart is that we don’t simply teach people how to write a book—we help them discover the significance of their voice. Before chapters are written, we focus on helping clients gain clarity around their core message, audience, and purpose because a book begins with a clear foundation.
Our approach is more personal. We recognize that writing from lived experience often requires vulnerability, courage, and healing. We create a supportive environment where clients feel seen, challenged, and encouraged to tell the stories they’ve carried for years.
More than anything, I’m proud that our work isn’t measured only by books published, but by the confidence people gain in the process. Watching someone go from saying, “I don’t know if my story matters,” to becoming a published author is incredibly rewarding. Every book has the potential to change a life—sometimes the author’s first, then the reader’s.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t view my journey through the lens of luck. As a woman of faith, I believe God has been writing my story long before I could see where it was leading. What some people might call luck, I see as God’s grace, guidance, provision, and His timing.
That doesn’t mean every opportunity came easily. There have been seasons of waiting, disappointment, closed doors, and moments when I questioned if I was on the right path. I’ve worked hard, invested in my growth, and stayed committed even when the results weren’t immediate. Looking back, I’ve realized that many of those “closed doors” were actually God’s protection and preparation for something greater.
There have also been moments that seemed almost impossible to plan—meeting the right mentor at the right time, receiving unexpected speaking invitations, earning recognition I never pursued, or connecting with people whose lives aligned with my mission. I don’t see those moments as coincidences or luck. I see them as reminders that when you’re faithful with what God has entrusted to you, He opens doors that no amount of networking or planning alone could create.
My faith has also sustained me during the difficult seasons. When I experienced burnout, when entrepreneurship felt overwhelming, or when progress seemed slow, it wasn’t luck that kept me moving forward. It was trusting that God had given me this purpose for a reason and that every step—even the challenging ones—was preparing me for the work I’m called to do.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that success isn’t simply about being in the right place at the right time. It’s about being prepared when God presents the opportunity. Simply put, my responsibility is to remain faithful, continue growing, serve others with excellence, and trust Him with the outcome.
