Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Johnson.
Hi Molly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2018, from a college apartment, I started painting goodies for sorority big-little baskets. That small creative outlet grew alongside me, through family Christmas gifts, housewarming presents, and now, live wedding paintings.
This is one of the biggest “blessings in disguise” of my life. Some of my closest friends came from this journey, it helped put me through graduate school, and it showed me what I actually love doing: capturing the exact moment two people become a “we.”
When I paint your wedding, I’m not just recreating a photo. I’m holding onto the part of the day that moves too fast to fully feel, so you can walk back into it anytime you want.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Mezzy Paintings is still my part time passion, which means my biggest challenge is simple: there are only so many hours in a day.
Between a full time job and painting weddings, time management is something I’m constantly working at, not something I’ve mastered. I’ve learned to protect my painting hours the same way I’d protect any commitment that matters, and I plan every event around what my couples actually need, not around how much I can squeeze in.
It keeps things slower than I’d sometimes like. But it also means every painting gets my full attention, because that’s the whole point.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main focus is live wedding paintings. I set up at your ceremony or reception and paint the day in real time, so you leave with more than photos. You leave with a piece of art that was made during the actual moment you’re celebrating.
I also offer guest illustrations, a way to bring guests into the art itself. Instead of just watching, they get a small, personalized illustration of their own, something they can take home as a keepsake from your day.
Both are built around the same idea: art shouldn’t just document a moment. It should hold it.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
A big part of growing Mezzy Paintings has come from showing up, not just posting online and waiting.
I make an effort to connect with other wedding vendors, venues, photographers, planners, florists, because they’re often the ones talking to couples before I ever get the chance to. Those relationships lead to real referrals, not just polite follow requests.
I also stay active in bridal Facebook groups and attend bridal shows whenever I can. Your audience is already telling you where they hang out! Your job is to actually be there.
Networking in this industry isn’t about collecting contacts. It’s about being known as someone other vendors trust enough to recommend, and that only happens by showing up consistently, not just when it’s convenient.
