Check Out Cedric Matthews’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cedric Matthews.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Matthews Studios started from my passion for photography and wanting to create something of my own. What started as me simply enjoying taking pictures eventually grew into a business where I could help people feel confident, comfortable, and proud of the way they see themselves.

As I continued learning my camera, lighting, editing, and the business side of photography, I started taking on more clients and expanding the types of sessions I offered. I’ve had the opportunity to work with families, entrepreneurs, small businesses, individuals, and people celebrating important moments in their lives.

I’m based in Birmingham, Alabama, and over the years Matthews Studios has continued to grow through word of mouth, social media, referrals, and most importantly, the people who have trusted me to capture their stories.

I’m still learning and growing every day, but my goal has always stayed the same: to create images that feel authentic to the person in front of my camera and give every client an experience where they can truly be themselves.

“Capture your story through my lens.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest struggles has been simply getting clients and figuring out how to consistently put myself and my business out there. I had to learn how to communicate like a business owner, promote myself, and build relationships with potential clients without feeling like I was forcing my services on people.

Another challenge has been coming up with ideas and actually executing them. There have been plenty of times where I’ve had an idea that I believed could help Matthews Studios grow, but turning that idea into something real took time, patience, and a lot of trial and error.

Through all of that, one of the biggest things I’ve had to learn is to keep my faith. There have been moments where I questioned whether things were going to work out, but I continued to remind myself why I started and kept pushing forward. The struggles have taught me patience, consistency, and how to keep going even when I don’t immediately see the results I’m hoping for.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Matthews Studios is a photography business based in Birmingham, Alabama. I specialize in lifestyle, branding, family, product, and event photography. I work with a variety of clients, from individuals wanting to capture a special moment to entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to build their brand through professional images.

What I’m most proud of is the experience I’m able to create for my clients. I want people to feel comfortable in front of my camera, especially those who may not consider themselves “photogenic” or who aren’t used to having their pictures taken. I focus on capturing their personality and making sure the images feel like them rather than making everything look overly posed or unrealistic.

I think what sets Matthews Studios apart is the personal connection I build with my clients. I’m not just focused on taking a picture and sending someone on their way. I want to understand what they’re looking for, bring their ideas to life, and create images they’re genuinely excited to have. My goal is simple: capture your story through my lens.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see Matthews Studios becoming a recognizable photography brand throughout Alabama and beyond. One of my biggest goals is to use my platform to help smaller businesses, entrepreneurs, creatives, and everyday people get more recognition and opportunities through quality photography.

I want Matthews Studios to be a place where people who may not have a big following or a lot of exposure can come in, have their story captured, and leave with images that help them present themselves professionally and get noticed.

At the same time, one of my goals is to grow Matthews Studios to the point where I’m working with celebrities, public figures, and major brands. I want to be able to look back and know that I didn’t just build a successful photography business for myself, but I also helped other people get seen along the way.
