Inspiring Conversations with Brittney-Jo Bassham of The Beehive Tattoo Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney-Jo Bassham.

Hi Brittney-Jo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got started in this industry via my father, he always was tattooing at home in our living room. Once I noticed that he could do art on people for ever, I thought that that was the way I wanted to go. Not really knowing what I wanted to do for college, I always stuck to drawing on my papers throughout class and doodling all the time. By the time I was nine years old, I’d come to the conclusion that that’s what I wanted to do with my life, be a tattoo artist. So I studied really hard had good grades and got my first tattoo machine by the age of nine, and from there I started practicing until I could be in the shop by the age of 16. In the time before I could be in the shop, I always practice holding my machine and pulling clean lines.By the age of 17 I had already gotten my license and was a professional tattoo artist still working in school. I’ve since then been tattooing for over a decade and now I’ve entered the journey of a lifetime to be a yoga teacher. I started teaching yoga in September 2025 and will have my 200 hour certification by this summer. I have owned honeydew for 2 1/2 years now which is my yoga studio and the tattoo shop has been open for going on 5 1/2 years now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing in life is easy, of course I always had grades that drop so my dad would take away my machines or tell me I couldn’t work on the floor (in my apprenticeship). Other than that, it’s been rocky, trying to get my colleagues to trust me enough to tattoo on them throughout my apprenticeship into my professional days. Now everything is a little easier, and the industry is a lot more welcoming.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
This is a woman owned business, I specialize in fine line and florals. I think what sets me apart is my attention to detail and my cleanliness in my lines. Our shop is proud to be very clean and open to the public and their questions. I want readers to know that we are a kind place and we are off so a safe space. Welcoming all walks of life we value your input and your projects.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Currently, I’ve been playing on procreate which is our drawing app that we utilize for the studio. Other than that, I stay on my business app for my yoga studio checking in students and making sure everyone is logged in. Nothing super crazy. I do watch a lot of YouTube.
