Today we’d like to introduce you to Journi TheArtist.
Hi Journi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a military brat, I had a lot of babysitters, but there was one in particular who always had Luther Vandross on repeat. That was what I looked forward to most: watching Luther Vandross step onto the stage, sweat, and sing from his soul. I still remember hearing Whitney Houston for the first time and discovering the magic of Michael Jackson. It was a beautiful musical concoction that inspired me. Those moments ushered me toward my destiny. Music has carried me through every season of my life. It has always been my light.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely been an experience, and a learning experience for sure. The music business… ahem… it’s a business. Learning the business side, especially as an independent artist, has been both challenging and fascinating. I’m grateful for every lesson, but I’m especially thankful for the friends I have in the music industry who genuinely guide me and support me when I need it most.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer, songwriter, producer, and creative storyteller. Everything I create begins with a feeling. Whether I’m writing a love song, performing on stage, or developing visuals for a project, my goal is to make people feel seen, connected, and inspired.
What sets me apart is that I’m not chasing trends. I’m building a world. My music blends soul, R&B, jazz, and timeless storytelling with a modern perspective. I want every song, visual, and performance to feel intentional, cinematic, and deeply human.
I also believe vulnerability is a strength. I’m not afraid to celebrate softness, romance, joy, confidence, and femininity. I want people to leave my music feeling lighter than when they arrived. If someone listens to one of my songs and feels understood, hopeful, or simply smiles, then I’ve done exactly what I set out to do.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that Birmingham is filled with such a rich and eclectic community of artists. I also love the entrepreneurial spirit that lives here. My least favorite thing about my city? When a restaurant doesn’t have sweet tea. If I order tea and it’s not sweet, I definitely feel some type of way. Alabama has some of the best sweet tea around, so no slacking allowed! 🤭
