Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Williams.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started from a childhood dream and a leap of faith. When i was a child my parents put me on to anime and video games. However through my own interest i learned about anime/gaming conventions. All of a sudden I got older and remembered that dream i had and I was finally able to afford my first out of state trip without my family. Anime Weekend Atlanta 2023 was my leap of faith and I’ve loved every second since that day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road wasn’t and sometimes still isn’t smooth. At first i didn’t have the knowledge or outlet to truly understand what i was doing with cosplay, but through the connections I made during my journey, I’ve learned plenty of ways to be more of me! Navigating these spaces was also pretty difficult at first, but i quickly learned that i just need to put myself out there and stay true to who i am. After i started doing that, it became much easier.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, aside from my actual job, i Cosplay! So far i’ve been cosplaying for almost 3 years now and i feel nothing but delight doing it. As of now, i am known mostly for my cosplays and the videos i make for them. Where i come from and how i incorporate my blackness in my work is definitely the biggest part of what makes me stand out! Im definitely most proud of the space ive built for the people near me. I want everyone to feel welcomed when they are around, so being able to curate a safe space for my friends and acquaintances always brings a smile to my face.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I can credit my nerdy nature to my mom and dad, they put a PS2 controller in my hands and the rest was history for me. From that moment forward ive always had a deep interest in video games, cartoons, anime, and what makes them work the way they do. Learning and diving into these fictional universes helped me slowly adopt a mindset to always treat other people how id like to be treated, so my kindness stems from that! To this day, i carry that with me and slowly learned who i am through it all.
