Conversations with ZAY The Bull

Today we’d like to introduce you to ZAY The Bull.

Hi ZAY The Bull , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in March of 1988 in West Palm Beach, Florida, to a recently widowed mother who had just turned 21 years old. My father passed away from a drug overdose in December of ’87.

I grew up in Florida, Alabama, and New Jersey. I started writing and rapping at the age of 13, and making music has always been my passion.

After graduating high school, I worked and later took some business management classes online. It was okay, but it wasn’t something I truly enjoyed. I’ve learned more from reading books and educating myself on my own time.
To break it down, I’m a carpenter, and I’ve been writing, recording, and engineering music—hip-hop, specifically—for over 20 years. I have 14 albums and countless mixtapes released, and music continues to be one of the biggest passions of my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is only as smooth as you make it. Yes, I’ve had obstacles in my path while finding myself in music and building my professional career, but on the other side of those obstacles was a brighter place, and each one became an even bigger blessing.

My mother struggled with drug addiction, so I moved in with my grandmother. When she became sick, I took care of her. Life wasn’t always easy, and I made some mistakes along the way. I ran into some legal issues, but in the end, everything worked out. Those experiences taught me valuable lessons, helped shape who I am, and ultimately made me a better man.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Music is my passion, but learning the music business, writing, and engineering are what I’m most proud of. I love helping other artists learn the business side of music, consulting with my peers, and helping create music with them. Being able to share what I’ve learned, collaborate with other artists, and help them grow is something I truly enjoy.

What were you like growing up?
I was an only child growing up, but I always had friends or cousins to interact with. I had a pretty normal childhood, other than having to deal with my mother’s drug addiction.

Personality-wise, I was a quiet kid in school. I enjoyed watching TV, playing video games, and listening to music. I was pretty laid-back and kept to myself, but music was always something that connected with me.
