Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackson Floyd.
Hi Jackson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story is pretty muted to be honest. I grew up always being into art and originally loved sketching as a child. It wasn’t until I was 19 or 20 that I went to therapy for the first time and was encouraged to use art as an outlet for my emotions. This is where my love for painting really took off. I’ve always been someone who can process most of my emotions fairly well except for sadness which is reflected in my art, seeing as that’s the emotion that requires venting the most for me. I also just kind of “fell into” my painting abilities. I have no formal training or education in art so everything I create is just purely from my brain without any “proper” technical training.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because my art started from a place of seeking therapy, it definitely hasn’t been the easiest ride. Aside from my art originating from a depressive episode, some of my art also requires me to sit in my negative emotions while creating the art which can make it hard to properly move on sometimes. I have absolutely had periods of time where I’ve considered giving up painting due to the mental strain but over time I have started to learn that all my paintings really do for me is help me work through my problems rather than run from them. So although it’s been a rocky road, those roads have led me to where I am today and it all only serves to help me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create black and white paintings of various styles and subjects! I originally landed on the black and white style due to my belief that monochrome paintings can display much more emotional and dramatic depth. Although I have created pieces that range from abstract paintings, all the way to realism, I definitely tend to lean more towards painting human aspects such as bodies, hands, eyes, faces, etc. I would say I am most proud of the fact that I think I have a genuinely unique style and all of my paintings ideas are born purely from my mind with pretty minimal outside influences. I think what sets me apart from many other artists is that I believe that I have comparable technical abilities to artists with formal art education & training despite my lack of training. I think this allows me to create paintings with compositions based on what “feels” right rather than what I am told by an instructor is the “right” way to create a painting.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success is just the ability to have the time and resources to create the art that I love. I do believe that I am successful in that sense. As long as I can create, I will be as successful as I want to be.
