Exploring Life & Business with Trey Black of WillCapture Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trey Black.

Hi Trey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I never imagined I’d be behind a camera. When I started college, I was torn between accounting and marketing. Creativity wasn’t even part of the conversation.

In 2016, I joined a business with some friends. My role? The money. I handled the business side while everyone else handled the creative work. Then one day, overnight, the ones that had a camera either quit, broke their camera, or moved away. All in a week.

So I bought a Canon T3i from my neighbor and stepped in and help the rest of the team.
I learned everything I could from YouTube University, and somewhere in those late nights of watching tutorials and practicing shots, something clicked. What I thought would be a two week solution turned into a passion I’m still living ten years later.

By 2018, I was picking up side gigs, projects for friends and family, anyone who needed a lens on their story. I dreamed about doing it full time, but honestly? I wasn’t sure it was possible.

Then 2021 changed everything. I joined a marketing agency and got to use a camera every single day. I grew as a visual storyteller, but more than that, I learned how to think like a business. Because no matter how beautiful the image is, if it doesn’t move the needle for a client, it doesn’t matter. That lesson stuck with me. I fell in love with the space where creativity and strategy meet, where a stunning visual actually does something.

There’s nothing like delivering work that makes a client feel like their investment was worth it. Seeing that moment of satisfaction, that became my why.

In 2025, I took the leap and launched WillCapture Media.

It’s still scary. But everything I’ve been through, the accidental start, the grind, the lessons learned, feels like it was always pointing here. My goal isn’t just to create great content. It’s to help businesses grow, and one day, to be a guide for the next generation of creatives who are standing where I once stood, wondering if this dream could really become a living.
It can. I’m proof!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running WillCapture Media means wearing every hat: director, CEO, editor, salesperson, and yes, janitor too. On any given day I’m delivering for current clients, keeping my systems and processes tight, and still finding time to put myself out there and bring in new business. Some days that balance feels impossible. The overwhelm is real. But learning to find balance and being willing to ask for help has been the difference between burning out and still being here, still growing, still loving what I do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about WillCapture Media?

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m more into mangas than books right now. One Piece and Witch Hat Atelier are my current reads.

For podcasts, I enjoy watching WVFRM Podcast because I am big into tech and TalkVibeHustle, a Birmingham-based podcast that’s equal entertaining and motivating.

On the tools side, my Google Calendar runs my life. If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist. Lastly the Chick-fil-A app makes the list because the points are real,
