Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Hitt.
Rebecca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in History, and started working in Huntsville’s museum and history scene in 2011. In 2013, I joined the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, where I spent over a decade tours, educating children, helping write exhibits, and eventually serving as Archivist. I also helped write the signage for the Signals Museum, led local history tours, and participated in the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll. (And still do the Stroll!)
In 2021, I joined Rocket City Mom. I loved it enough that in 2024 I made the leap to work for RCM full time, which meant leaving the Rocket Center. It was a career switch with a big family impact, allowing me to work from home, be present with my son, and homeschool him, while still doing work I loved. Then on July 7 of this year, I officially purchased Rocket City Mom and became its Owner & Publisher. I am extremely excited about this adventure!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always bumps in the road when you’re a working mom, that’s just part of it. (really, just life in general for anyone!) For me, there’s an extra layer too, I live with multiple sclerosis, so juggling motherhood, running a business, and managing a chronic illness can get hectic, to say the least. Some days are harder than others. But I count myself immensely blessed, for my family, this community, and the work I get to do every day.
As you know, we’re big fans of Rocket City Mom. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Rocket City Mom is basically the friend who already did the research for you. We’re a digital resource for families in the Huntsville and North Alabama area. If you’re wondering what’s happening this weekend, where to take your kids for a birthday party, which preschool to check out, or just want the inside scoop on this community, that’s us. We cover it all through our website, a newsletter that goes out every Thursday, and social media. On the business side, we partner with local businesses through advertising and sponsorships, helping them get in front of families who are actively looking for exactly what they offer. It’s one of my favorite parts of the job, connecting great local businesses with the families who need to know about them.
What does success mean to you?
That’s a great and hard question! It really just depends. Sometimes what we don’t count as success, totally is when we look back on it. Or is a success in a different way than we originally thought. Or what we think is a fail puts us on the path to success can you really count it as “not success” if maybe you just haven’t reached the “success” part of the story? So it really does just depend and also depends on your mindset. Also, when in doubt, ask someone you trust. My husband is my greatest cheerleader and is so supportive. He helps me see my successes for what they are.
