Inspiring Conversations with Adi Kaur of Theblkyogitribe LLC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adi Kaur

Hi Adi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Today I am the owner and founder of Birmingham, Alabama’s first black-owned yoga studio. Today I’ve certified over 50 yoga instructors. Today I’ve attuned several students to the reiki lineage and continue to host attunement workshops. Today I am a sought-after teacher, mentor, and friend.

I would honestly say that this is from living my life to the fullest possibility. I think I got here by taking advantage of any circumstance I was placed in. I arrived today by walking in my lane and doing the impossible.

When it comes to my determination I am one of one. I won’t rest until the job is finished. I truly live and breathe “how you do anything is how you do everything” when it comes to the way that I show up in spaces.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not a smooth road. For one, the visibility of BIPOC yoga instructors or participants is slim to none. The last time I checked we represent less than 10% of the yoga population.

It was hard getting people to care about yoga, feel safe in yoga spaces, and feel seen and understood.
It took a lot of trial and error. It took a lot of stillness and discipline.

I would never and could never give up on empowering more people who look like me to get on the mat, and express themselves through movement, or stillness.

Yoga is more than just the poses, it is a lifestyle. It is a space to be self-aware without judgment.

I honor the challenge because nothing was promised to be easy, it is only possible.

As you know, we’re big fans of Theblkyogitribe LLC. . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
BLK stands for breathing living knowledge, that is our mission here at Theblkyogitribe. We aim to bring awareness to the mind and body through the connection of the breath in pranayama practices.

We are Birmingham’s first Black-Owned and accredited yoga school and studio, that is what we are known for.
We are known for hosting events in the park where black and brown people gather in sync of movement and breath, Sunday Funday.

We are known for the Melanin Mala Project, an event thats hosted annually to raise awareness during mental health awareness month. We partner with sponsors to make this event FREE to the public.

We are known for starting and finishing what we said we would do, we are known as an unstoppable force of nature.
There are no limits to the growth and potential of Theblkyogitribe.

I am most proud of the fundraising campaign that we ran raising $20,000 via GoFundMe to renovate our studio. That entire experience was one for the books. It was an extremely uncomfortable time in my life but I must say I say the most growth in our business than I have ever seen before. The mayor of Birmingham along with another congresswoman attended our grand opening on November 21st, 2023.

I want readers to know that we provide Reiki attunement levels I – III, restorative, trauma-informed, and 200-hour yoga teacher trainings in studio.

We offer mentorship and business coaching providing growth strategies for other new or seasoned yoga teachers.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like most about being in Birmingham is the support system. Whenever I put out an ask or a sos the community always has my back. They show up like never before and we always succeed.

I don’t think there is anything that I don’t like about being here, I am content wherever I go.
