Life & Work with Dino Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dino Jones

Hi Dino, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I decided to pursue a career as a writer because I wanted to create stories that move people. Whether through laughter or tears, I’ve wanted to create characters and stories that people can connect with. Since I was a child, I wanted to get into writing stories. Back then I had a desire to create an animated series. These days I created a universe far from what I wanted as a kid. I’m currently gearing up to release my first short story collection. I’ll release it this summer with a book signing soon after.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t call it smooth, no. As a self-published author, the biggest hurdle I’ve encountered is getting the word out about my work. My family has helped spread the word which has helped my novels grow a small audience. I pray that more people will discover it as I release more material.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Professionally speaking, I’m a self-published author which means I do pretty much all the work of getting the word out concerning my work. Amazon takes care of the publishing aspect of things. It can be quite challenging to advertise my books but I’ve been blessed to have family help via word of mouth.

I write stories that only I could come up with I feel. That being said, I do like to reference other works, whether it be music, movies, or video games, in my work. I like to jerk those tears.

When I come up with ideas I tend to lean more toward the emotional melancholic side. I find stories like that to be quite interesting. If I can stir emotion within the reader and even jerk a few tears out I feel like I’ve accomplished my goal and then some.

I suppose the thing I’ve released which I’m proudest of is my second novel, ‘Some Things Last…’. I worked on that novel for two and a half years and it’s a story that touches upon some very personal feelings of mine…almost painfully personal at times.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
A few key individuals and groups have inspired my writing. I want to dedicate this particular shoutout to Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, and GENESIS as a whole. Their music has greatly inspired my work so far and I feel it will continue to do so. I want to also dedicate this to Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally of BEACH HOUSE. Within my second novel, ‘Some Things Last…’ their music inspired many scenes throughout the novel as well as other facets of that work.

Other supporters of my work I’d like to thank are my Aunt Pam and my cousin Brent! They have been with me since the beginning and continue to support my writing. My late grandmother Mema. She thoroughly enjoyed my debut novel and how I wish she could have read my second novel. My buddy Sean always has encouraging words for me. Leah Albert for her awesome work on my covers. Kat Campbell for her amazing character sketches which brought some characters to life!!
