Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Brown.
Hi Aaron, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I feel like my story as an emcee and an artist is really only just beginning, but I have learned so many different lessons and gained so many nuggets of wisdom that It feels like I’ve been doing It forever. I began on the journey of both during the 2020 pandemic. I was a 2020 summa cum laude graduate of the Alabama State University with a degree in Radio &TV, and my initial dream of being an ESPN analyst or anchor was becoming more and more complicated as my senior year of college was cut short effecting both my offers and my post-college plan. As I moved back to Birmingham in 2022, I began writing music more and became an emcee for the Birmingham Squadron, the former g-league affiliate for the New Orleans Pelicans. As an emcee, I have been able to work with almost all of the professional sports teams in the city of Birmingham and am currently one of the emcees for the Chicago White Sox, Double-A team, the Birmingham Barons. As a musical artist the inspiration came both during the pandemic and when I moved back to Birmingham after my dad got sick. Writing music and singing was a way of escape and a healthy way to express things I was going through in my life at the time. The stage name, H.I.M., healing in music, came from my appreciation for the R&B artist, H.E.R., and is a continuous reminder of the reason behind why I make music to both help myself heal through the music but also the people who listen to my music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I believe there’s never a smooth road to success and I honestly believe that the turbulence of your journey is what grooms you into being ready to succeed. I would say that until I graduated from college, my road and my life was honestly pretty smooth. I grew up with both of my parents in the household. My dad made six figures and he was still extremely present in my life and my mom stayed at home majority of my pre-college years. I had a big family that was extremely close and I was extremely successful both academically and for the most part socially from elementary through college. The road really began to get rocky as I mentioned before when I had to leave my senior year prematurely due to covid. Since I was a child, I had always had school to affirm my trajectory and how I was doing in life, so when that affirmation of receiving good grades, or performing well at an internship, or being sure of the path your life was taking was removed, It took a minute to come to terms with not having the validation of school and trusting in God and his plan and timing. Once I came to terms with not having everything together right out of college, my dad had a stroke and I moved back to Birmingham to help with the recovery process. The rehabilitation process was honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with in my life and stretched me physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. My family leaned on my dad for a lot of responsibilities and for a long time I felt responsible for filling in his place while he recovered; however, both experiences have groomed me into the man I am today and have allowed me to lean on God even more as He prepares me for this next season of life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I believe my art is multi-faceted, which kind of reflects me and my personality. My specialty is working on the mic as an emcee. I am a professional sports emcee and have been doing It for five years now. I am proud to just have been able to make an impact in the city I grew up in and continue to build relationships as my career blossoms. Prong two is my music, which I have been taking serious since about 2021. I released my debut single Constant Dejavu in 2023 and plan to release my debut album Love Lessons before the end of this year. I also am getting ready to release ny first feature with my good brother, Creativangel entitled Yah’s Love. I have been blessed to meet so many cool, creative people through the music and it’s honestly something that is extremely therapeutic and communal in bringing people together. Finally, the last venture I began doing was my screenwriting. I have currently written 3 registered feature films and one 10 episode series. I love the storytelling aspect of both writing music and movies and believe that as I continue to grow as a writer and God blesses me with the right network of producers and film industry people, I can make films at a high level for years to come.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I am a firm believer that God is in control of everything, and there is nothing lucky or unlucky that He hasn’t divinely orchestrated for our lives. One of the greatest things I’ve gained over the course of the last few years in building my career and brand is unquestioned trust in God in orchestrating His will in my life, and I believe that if He has given me the vision and inspiration to do something then as long as I am being obedient, He will provide the ram in the bush and provide every resource, connection, and opportunity to complete the task.
