Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Fortune Barker.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Leadership has always been a natural part of my journey. Long before I held executive titles, I was leading in church, at school, and at home as the oldest of three siblings. Those early experiences shaped the values that continue to guide me today and laid the foundation for a life dedicated to service.
I describe myself as a strategist, activist, and orator, but at the heart of everything I do are three simple commitments: to educate, engage, and empower.
As the CEO and Principal Strategist of Affluent Business Consulting, LLC, I’ve spent more than a decade helping entrepreneurs, executives, and influential leaders build sustainable organizations through strategic planning, executive advisory services, and organizational development. The same strategic framework I developed for my own company has fueled its consistent growth and opened opportunities to support leaders and institutions across the country.
My passion for community is equally reflected in my work as President of AL Association for the Arts, where I’ve helped revitalize the organization into a hub for civic engagement and community impact. Under my leadership, our arts initiatives and Lift Our Vote, our nonpartisan civic engagement program, has supported us in reinvesting more than $400,000 into communities across the South while working to create a culture of voting and communities of change through Civics and Arts.
While those accomplishments are meaningful, my greatest transformation happened away from the spotlight. In December 2019, I underwent a life-altering open craniotomy just as the world was entering the COVID-19 pandemic. That experience forced me to slow down, rebuild, and redefine success. It became a season of healing that ultimately clarified my purpose.
Today, every business I build, every initiative I lead, and every opportunity to serve is rooted in that experience. I’ve learned that transformation is the art of becoming.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have faced severe bouts with imposter syndrome and feeling inadequate in some of the spaces I have occupied. I also have held on to seasons and reasons too long and have found that it has delayed and sometimes denied my access to blessings and opportunities.
My journey has taught me though, not to look to assign blame for my challenges, but to assess and pivot to strengthen areas that present as obstacles.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Affluent Business Consulting was born out of a pattern I noticed long before I ever launched the company. I found myself working alongside talented entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, and executives who had incredible vision but lacked the strategic infrastructure needed to sustain it. Too often, I watched great ideas struggle—not because they weren’t valuable, but because there wasn’t a clear roadmap to move them from concept to long-term success.
That’s where I found my purpose.
Today, Affluent Business Consulting is a strategic advisory firm that helps mission-driven leaders build organizations that are not only successful, but sustainable. We provide executive advisory services, business and nonprofit consulting, strategic planning, leadership development, workshop facilitation, public speaking, and operational support designed to help organizations grow with intention.
What sets us apart is that we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every organization has its own mission, culture, challenges, and opportunities. Rather than handing clients a generic plan, we partner with them to develop practical strategies they can actually implement. I often tell clients that strategy is only as valuable as your ability to execute it. My goal is to help leaders move beyond surviving day to day and begin building organizations that can thrive long after they’re no longer leading them.
My work is also shaped by experiences beyond the boardroom. As a business owner, nonprofit executive, civic leader, and community organizer, I’ve had the opportunity to lead organizations through growth, uncertainty, fundraising, public engagement, and organizational transformation. Those experiences allow me to approach every client relationship with both strategic insight and real-world perspective.
I am most proud of my brand’s sustainability over the years and of my ability to shift the brand to remain relevant and responsive to the transformational needs of the clients we serve. Whether we’re helping an entrepreneur launch a business, strengthening a nonprofit’s infrastructure, or advising executive leaders through complex decisions, I want every client to leave with greater clarity, confidence, and capacity than when they arrived.
At its core, Affluent Business Consulting exists to help leaders build legacies—not just businesses. Success should outlive the founder. That’s the standard I hold myself to, and it’s the standard I help my clients achieve.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
No one builds something meaningful alone, and I am incredibly grateful for the people who have poured into me throughout this journey.
First and foremost, I have to credit my husband, Joseph Barker. He has been far more than my spouse, he has been my mentor, trusted advisor, greatest supporter, and biggest advocate. During some of my most challenging seasons, he has provided honest counsel, unwavering encouragement, and the steady foundation that allowed me to continue building with confidence. Every entrepreneur needs someone who believes in the vision, even on the days when the path isn’t clear, and he has been that person for me.
I’m also deeply grateful for my colleagues and associates, Gloria Hollins and Dr. Omekia McNeal. They have been true partners in this journey. Beyond supporting the day-to-day needs of the business, they’ve stepped in to serve clients with excellence and have helped transform ideas into execution. As a visionary, I’m constantly generating new ideas, and their ability to bring structure, organization, and follow-through has been instrumental in our growth. They don’t just support the work, they strengthen it.
I’m equally thankful for the clients who have trusted Affluent Business Consulting over the years. One client, in particular, has grown alongside our company, allowing me the space to explore different facets of consulting and discover where my greatest strengths and passions truly lie. That level of trust is something I never take for granted. Our clients have shaped our evolution just as much as we’ve helped shape theirs.
