Today we’d like to introduce you to DeSean Motley.
Hi DeSean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I never started filmmaking expecting it to become a career. I picked up a camera because I loved storytelling, and over time that hobby turned into paid work and eventually Dmot Productions. In the early years, I made a lot of sacrifices to keep pursuing it. I went years without buying new clothes or shoes because every extra dollar went back into equipment, education, and growing the business. That commitment helped me turn a passion into a profession. Today, I’m a BOTH Path Fellow and Manager of the Film Office at Create Birmingham, and I use those experiences to help make high-quality video production more accessible to small businesses and nonprofits. Looking ahead, my goal is to continue growing Dmot Productions while creating original short films and feature films that can have a larger impact on audiences and the filmmaking community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building a creative business from the ground up meant dealing with a lot of uncertainty, especially in the beginning. There were times when I invested everything I had back into the business, even putting off things like buying new clothes or shoes for years so I could afford equipment and continue improving my craft.
Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges with finding clients, balancing finances, and proving the value of professional filmmaking in markets where budgets are often limited. But those struggles taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the importance of continually investing in both my skills and my community. Looking back, those challenges played a major role in shaping both Dmot Productions and the filmmaker I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a filmmaker and the founder of Dmot Productions, where I create video content for small businesses, nonprofits, and organizations looking to tell their stories in a compelling way. My work ranges from promotional and branded content to documentary-style storytelling and narrative films, always with a focus on creating high-quality visuals that connect with audiences.
I’m most proud of turning a passion that started as a hobby into a career. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to produce award-winning films that have been recognized at film festivals, while also helping local businesses and nonprofits access professional-quality filmmaking that is often out of reach for organizations with limited budgets.
What sets me apart is the combination of experience and perspective I bring to my work. While I’m still early in my career, I’ve spent years developing my craft, building a production company, winning awards for my films, and working with a wide range of clients. Being a younger filmmaker allows me to bring a fresh creative vision, stay current with trends and technology, and approach projects with a level of energy and adaptability that helps clients stand out in a crowded media landscape.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love making films. It’s the reason I wake up in the morning and go to bed late at night.
Im so lucky to find a job within my passion.
