Rising Stars: Meet Shamica Wilson of Alabama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamica Wilson.

Hi Shamica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a natural hairstylist and entrepreneur behind 2XX The Beauty, XXcollective LLC where I specialize in braid styles while building a beauty brand that extends beyond the chair. Growing up, I was always doing hair, and by high school I was styling family and friends regularly. After graduating, I worked traditional jobs while doing hair on the side. After becoming a mother and balancing work, college, and raising my children, life became overwhelming. I found myself constantly trying to juggle everything while still pursuing my passion.

In April 2022, I made the decision to quit my job and become a full-time hairstylist. It was a scary decision, but it was also one of the best decisions I’ve made because it allowed me to bet on myself, create more flexibility for my family, and build a career doing what I truly love.

Over the years, I’ve continued to grow as both a hairstylist and entrepreneur, and I’m incredibly grateful for every client and connection I’ve made along the way. Their support has played a huge role in my journey.

Nearly four years later, I’m still evolving, learning, and finding new ways to elevate my craft while building a life on my own terms.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was balancing motherhood, college, and entrepreneurship all at once while trying to build stability for myself and my children. There were times when I felt stretched thin trying to manage school, work, clients, and family responsibilities. Another challenge was learning how to grow my business without a blueprint, figuring out pricing, branding, consistency, and navigating entrepreneurship through trial and error. Over time, those challenges taught me resilience, discipline, and how to adapt. Every obstacle pushed me to grow, and I’m grateful for the lessons that helped shape both me and my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a natural hairstylist who specializes in braiding, especially knotless braids, feed-in braids, and protective styles in general. During a time when boho knotless bob styles were trending, that became one of the looks I was widely recognized for, and it helped bring more attention to my work.

Beyond the styles themselves, I’m known for my customer service and the experience I provide. I genuinely care about my clients, my craft, and making sure people leave feeling confident and valued. I’ve always believed in being honest, staying professional, and not taking advantage of people just because something is trending. I want my clients to feel like they’re receiving quality work that matches what they’re paying for.

What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come. I’m proud of the journey, the sacrifices I’ve made, and the growth I continue to see within myself every year. I’m also excited about what’s ahead because I know I’m only getting started.

What sets me apart is my ability to truly listen to what my clients want while still being authentic to who I am as a stylist. I focus on creating quality work, building genuine relationships, and giving people an experience that keeps them coming back.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is freedom, family, and growth. Freedom matters because I’ve worked hard to create a life where I’m in control of my time and able to build something for myself instead of feeling limited. As a mother, family will always be a huge priority for me. A big reason I pushed so hard was to create a better life for my children while also being present for important moments in their lives.

Growth also matters a lot to me, personally, professionally, and financially. I never want to stay stagnant. I’m always looking for ways to improve my craft, expand my business, and evolve into the best version of myself.

Most importantly, I value being genuine and treating people well. Whether it’s my clients, supporters, or people I meet along the way, I believe in creating real connections and leaving people with a positive experience. At the end of the day, success means nothing if you’re not able to enjoy your life, take care of your family, and grow into the person you’re meant to become.
